What is the EPCglobal Network?
The EPCglobal Network will use RFID technology and the EPC to provide accurate, trusted and immediate information about items throughout the global supply chain.
The network consists of six fundamental elements:
1. Electronic Product Code (EPC). The EPC is a globally unique serial number that identifies the individual item to which it is attached. This enables enquiries to be made about the individual item wherever it is within the global supply chain.
2. EPC tag. An EPC tag is an RFID device that consists of a microchip and an antenna attached to a substrate which is physically attached to an item. The unique EPC for this item is stored within the memory of the tag.
3. EPC readers. An EPC reader is a device that reads the EPC from the EPC tag using radio waves. Readers are placed at relevant points within the supply chain to track the movement of items along the supply chain.
4. EPC Middleware. EPC Middleware is software that processes and consolidates the data from the reader which is then communicated on to the EPC Information Services and/or companies’ existing internal information systems.
5. EPC Information Services (EPC IS). EPC Information Services enables users to exchange EPC-related data with trading partners through the EPCglobal Network.
6. Discovery Services. Discovery Services is a suite of services that enables users to find any data related to a specific EPC and to request access to that data.
