RFID readers

An RFID reader comprises an antenna and a controller. The controller codes, decodes, checks and stores the data, manages communications with the tags and communicates with the host. Strictly speaking a “reader” only reads data from the tags whereas an “interrogator” reads data from the tags and writes data to them.

The reader and tag communicate wirelessly across what is known as the air-interface. The information is then passed from the reader to the host system. In the case of read/write systems information can be passed back through the system from the host to the reader over the air-interface and stored in the memory of the tag.
