Global Standards Management Process (GSMP)

What is GSMP?
The Global Standards Management Process (GSMP) is a single common approach to the global maintenance, development and implementation of the GS1 Standards. GSMP is driven primarily by GS1 members as well as GS1 staff and comprises a series of groups focusing on particular aspects of the GS1 System (formerly EAN.UCC System). The GSMP process is transparent and can be accessed through its website.

Which standards are covered by GSMP?
All GS1 Standards are maintained/developed through GSMP. These include:

  • The General GS1 Specifications (numbering and identification standards)
  • Electronic messages (EANCOM and XML based standards)
  • Global Data Synchronication: the alignment of all product master data
  • EPCglobal standards: international standards for radio frequency identification tags for supply chains

How does it work?
The GSMP process is triggered by the submission of a change request (CR). An initial assessment is carried out by GS1 staff and a decision is given to either accept or reject it, based on whether a solution already exists.

The CR is then passed through Business Requirement Groups or Technical Requirement Groups (GS1 user groups) to develop a solution for the change request. The final agreed solution is ratified prior to being published.

How can members get involved?
Submit change requests - provide your feedback to improve any area of the GS1 System (formerly EAN.UCC System), in one of the following ways:

1. Use the GS1 Romania GSMP service to submit your change request through the GSMP page on the members on line area.

This service has the following advantages:

  • assistance in formulating the change request
  • advice if other users have similar issues, adding weight to your request
  • check if a solution already exists
  • track and manage your change request as it goes through GSMP, minimising demand on your time
  • GS1 Romania will contact you about your change request by the end of the next working Day

2. Contact one of GS1 Romania’s technical working groups for guidance and potential assistance in developing the change request.

3.Submit the change request direct to GSMP through the GSMP website.
